Intern - Investment Analyst Q2 2021

Job Posting: Intern – Investment Analyst

The Halifax Regional Municipality Pension Plan has approximately $2.2 billion in assets under management invested across public equities, fixed income, private equity, private credit, infrastructure and real estate. The Plan is a sophisticated institutional investor that commits capital via primary funds, separate accounts, co-investments and secondary transactions across the world.

At HRM Pension Plan, you will join a small team of engaged and motivated professionals committed to delivering strong results for our stakeholders.

Based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the candidate will have the opportunity to work meaningfully with the investment team across both private and public investments.

This internship / co-op work term will run from May – August 2021. Due to the current situation with COVID-19, this is expected to be a primarily remote position.

Role & Responsibilities

The Intern will be an active member of our investment team assisting with all aspects of the investing process. Within private investments, he/she will assist in evaluation of deals in the private equity, infrastructure and private credit asset classes. Within public investments, the candidate will be involved in projects related to investment manager evaluation and due diligence, and analysis of new strategic opportunities to allocate capital.

More specifically, the successful candidate will assist the investment team in performing preliminary research on new investment opportunities across primary funds and co-investments. He / she will participate in due diligence, including the identification of key investment merits and risks, and performing industry, sector and valuation analysis. The successful candidate will also gain exposure to financial modelling including reviewing and editing discounted cash flow and leveraged buyout models.

•This role is open to students currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in a quantitative discipline.Preference will be given to candidates in accounting, finance or economics programmes with strongacademic results.
•A high degree of analytical and problem-solving skills is required.
•Excellent communication skills will serve the successful candidate well while working in our genuinelycollegial environment.

The ideal person for this position will have a high level of commitment to the internship and a genuine passion for the investment profession. The internship will be designed to set the right candidate up for full time positions in sell-side advisory / investment banking or other buy side opportunities, and also serve them well for pursuing the CFA exams.
