The Halifax Regional Municipality Pension Plan (the 'Plan') is a defined benefit pension plan designed to provide lifelong retirement income for our members and their beneficiaries. Employer-sponsored pension plans such as ours form one of the three pillars of retirement income (the other two being personal savings and government-sponsored programs). They also alleviate some of the stress typically associated with financial planning and help members prepare for this important next chapter of their lives.
Throughout their careers, our members regularly contribute to the Plan. These contributions, which are matched equally by participating employers, along with investment returns, ensure that we are able to provide the promised pension benefits to our members.
Currently, the Plan has over 13,440 members. Our membership includes employees of the local Police, Fire and Transit unions, Outside and Inside workers as well as other local municipal employees (for a complete list of the Plan's Participating Employer’s click here).
