June 24, 2026 - UPDATE FOR HRM PENSION PLAN MEMBERS REGARDING CONTRIBUTION REDUCTION

The Pension Committee for the Halifax Regional Municipality Pension Plan (the “Plan”) is providing this update to let Plan members know some new information regarding the contribution reduction scheduled for June 28, 2026. As previously communicated, the arbitration decision received on April 24, 2026 required a ratification process be completed before implementing the contribution reduction. The ratification process is now complete, and the Pension Committee is pleased to announce that the contribution reduction has been approved.

What is changing?

Starting June 28, 2026, employee and employer contributions to the Plan will each decrease by 2% of regular pensionable earnings. You should notice the change in your defined benefit pension contributions starting with the first pay period after June 28. Please note that employers will be implementing this change as quickly as possible, but it is possible some employers may not have it in place for June 28. Those employers with delayed implementation will ensure the change is made retroactively back to June 28. The contribution rate change does not impact the pension you receive at retirement in any way.

Where can I get more information?
